# EDGE

EDGE serves as the native cryptocurrency and governance asset of the EDGE ecosystem. Its functions are designed to evolve as the protocol matures and the community grows.

In the area of governance, EDGE empowers token holders to influence the direction of the platform by voting on edgeX Improvement Proposals (eIPs), which may cover matters such as fee structure adjustments, new asset listings, blockchain compatibility upgrades and security protocol enhancements.

With respect to staking, EDGE enables holders to contribute to network security through a delegated validator system. By staking their EDGE tokens, holders delegate to validators who are responsible for validating transactions and maintaining the integrity of the edgeX orderbook, and in return earn a share of protocol rewards derived from transactions occurring on the protocol. Tokens that are subject to lock-up periods will not be staked during the lock-up period.

EDGE is also intended to serve as a vehicle for ecosystem incentives, supporting developer grants, early adopter programmes and liquidity provision rewards as the protocol grows.

The total supply of EDGE is 1,000,000,000 tokens:

* Early Users: 30% ( 25.0% to the genesis distribution & 5% to the Pre TGE Season )
* Liquidity: 5% 
* Ecosystem & Community: 5%
* Foundation: 5%
* Future Reserve: 30%
* Core Contributors: 25%

Tokens allocated to Early Users will be fully unlocked at genesis.

Ecosystem & Community tokens will remain locked for 12 months after TGE, followed by 24 months of linear monthly vesting.

Foundation tokens will remain locked for 12 months after TGE, followed by 24 months of linear monthly vesting.

Future Reserve tokens will remain locked for 18 months after TGE, followed by 24 months of linear monthly vesting.

Tokens allocated to core contributors will be locked for 24 months after TGE, followed by 24 months of linear monthly vesting.&#x20;
